SIDEWALK REPAIR UPDATE

In early 2023, the NSCA had contacted Dan Goodwin, Superintendent of Highways for Southold Town, regarding the extremely poor state of the sidewalks in New Suffolk.  Dan Goodwin agreed that this project was needed.  He was actively working on achieving funding for the repairs, however the project was initially unlikely to be done this year. Thankfully we found out recently that he was successful!
As some of you may have seen, the town has already started repairs on the sidewalks.
Dan emailed us recently and explained the time frame for the repairs: " For this year we will be going [New Suffolk Rd] from King St to Main St then along Main Street to 1st Street. Construction on the replacement section should be completed in about a week and a half depending on weather. We will be doing some in house repairs in front of the school either this fall or in the spring. That section is very complicated due to the retaining wall and its proximity to the school property line as well as a few trees which would need to be removed. This approach will be far less disruptive to the area. "

Please be aware of the workers and traffic pattern changes in town from this project, as well as the PSEGLI pole repair work in both New Suffolk and Cutchogue.

We hope you are all enjoying the start of Fall in New Suffolk.

UPDATE on Deep Hole Creek Preservation Project: Good News!

Here is an update from the Peconic Land Trust regarding Deep Hole Creek Preservation Project:

September 3rd  Update

Since July, our team at the Trust has been working with the Koehler family to work through a few aspects of our conditional offer. We are so happy to share with you that, as of Wednesday, we are in contract to purchase this parcel!

We are so grateful to the Koehler family for choosing to collaborate with us, the Town, and YOU, the community, to achieve a conservation outcome. This land will be conserved forever, because so many people cared and joined together in community-focused spirit.

We anticipate closing on this property in November. At that time, the Peconic Land Trust will become the owner of this parcel, and with the simultaneous sale of development rights to the Town, the land will be protected in perpetuity.

The Trust chose to come forward as the temporary owner of this property so that we would not lose the land to development. However, the Trust plans to be an interim owner only, with the goal of selling the protected property to a conservation buyer who will potentially cultivate the land.

Additional funds will be needed to get us to closing, and we will share this target with you in the coming weeks.

Thank you for your generosity and hard work to support this project; we couldn’t do it without you! Stay tuned!
